In my younger and more vulnerable years, I loved tennis. Ivan Lendl, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg: these were my guys. But none of them stepped onto the court as fresh as Andre Agassi. Two of the best sneakers I ever wore were his.
First came the Nike Air Tech Challenge II shoes (ca.1990). These were the first pair of sneakers that cost $100, and I wore them every day - indoors and out. I'm pretty sure the hot salmon lava didn't match with anything I owned, but I freely exercised my podiatric license.
Two decades later I snatched up a pair of the Nike Air Trainer Ones, a slightly modernized version of their 1988 predecessors that were Agassi's first sneakers as part of his Nike deal, (even though they had already been popularized by John McEnroe). The predominant grey and black uppers, touch of green, and muscular black strap keep these heavy in my rotation.
These might be the most handsome sneakers I've ever owned. When their end is nigh, I might have to get a second pair.
